2. Upstream raw materials and production processes
Upstream raw materials: Ethanol; Sodium ethoxide; Ethyl acetate; Diketene; Sulfuric acid.
The esterification of diketene with ethanol is currently the main method for industrial production in China. Diketene and anhydrous ethanol undergo esterification catalyzed by copper sulfate to obtain crude ethyl acetoacetate, which is then purified by vacuum distillation. Ethyl acetate self-condensation method: Ethyl acetate undergoes reaction and is finally purified to obtain the product (mainly used in laboratories).
3. Main uses and downstream products
Primarily used as a solvent in industry; in pesticides for synthesizing organophosphorus insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. In food, used for flavoring apple, apricot, and other fruit essences; in pharmaceuticals for producing aminopyrine and vitamin B, among others; in dyes for film staining.
Downstream products: Used in organic synthesis to produce pyridine, cyclic ketones, etc.; in pharmaceuticals, triethyl and resorcinol cyclization yield 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (an intermediate for antiallergic drugs).
Ethyl acetoacetate cyclized with thiourea yields the antithyroid drug methylthiouracil.
